*Also, show was great last night. I am working on tweaking the file (you will see why when I'm done). But I think you will like it.
Anyways, on to the post. On the first one of these, there was virtually no positive feedback. It's cool with me, I'm not in the band so I don't get my feelings hurt. I actually liked the honesty. But because of that, I'm not sure where I want to go with the next one. I am going to try and stay away from the Punk Goes... series for as long as I can cuz those are almost too easy.
Ok here is my thing about covers: I don't really like a hardcore band covering a hardcore song. It just ends up sounding the same. Although there a few here and there that are good. My favorite kinds are when a guy covers a girls song or vice versa, it's an acoustic cover of a fast song or if it crosses genres, like this one, where we go from R&B/pop to Alternative.
Today's cover: Cry Me A River
Original version by Justin Timberlake
Cover version by Lostprophets (please forgive the quality)

What do you think? Did they do it justice? Did they butcher it? Make it better? Obviously I like it, but I'm curious as to what you think...
Omg! I loved Harry Potter. Yes, I'm that Harry Potter nerd who watches all the movies and reads the books. One day you should just sit on the sofa and watch them all(if you have them). I have all of them and watched all five before leaving my house on tues night for the midnight showing. A little refresher. I know, I sound lame...=)
ReplyDeleteI think Lostprophets made it better. I love cover songs, but you know only the really good covers.
Happy Friday(well almost)
Hmmm. I'll have to admit I'm not a huge fan of this song in the first place - I got pissed off at Justin Timberlake for ripping off the title line from one of the most famous jazz standards ever (the real version of "Cry Me A River" was immortalised by Julie London). But like I said in Vol 1, I listen to a LOT of old music. Grandma-style old music. Educate yourself and listen to the classic version... Very, very different to what you'd normally listen to, I'm guessing. (Trivia: this version of the song was featured in V for Vendetta).
ReplyDeleteANYWAY: For me, the JT version wins. Somehow, the cover just wasn't as convincing. But I suppose it's hard to make a fundamentally shitty song good in the first place, really.
OK. Brutal honesty over. I fucking love these "Under My Covers", Mr O - even if I've slammed both covers so far! HA! Keep it up.
I don't know about this one, I think I much prefer (although you'd said they were too easy) Alesana's cover of What Goes Around on Punk Goes Pop vol. 2
ReplyDeleteOh, and you know how much I love Harry Potter. I'd offer to watch it with you, but... You know...
ReplyDelete@Melissa:
ReplyDeleteWHAT! Positive feedback??? Haha, i'm glad you liked it. And I'm glad you liked the Harry Potter movie, i've heard from some people that didn't.
@jeanette:
I hope that didn't sound doucheish to say that it was easy, because what I was trying to say was there were so many good ones that I could just start using them. Your comment made me listen to that cd this morning on the way to class. Nice refresher. Little trivia: That was the first song I played out on that cd.
@the girl:
Oh, you girl. You and your comments. No words can describe how much I love them. First of all, your "brutal honesty" -- But I suppose it's hard to make a fundamentally shitty song good in the first place, really -- is awesome. But I have to say this about music. I don't really have a normal listening session. I mean sure, there is music I prefer, but I mean it when I say I am one of those people that listens to ANYTHING. And as much as I try to spread my music, what I really love is getting new music, hence why I love jeanette's blog so much because I am constantly finding new stuff on there. But as you can see, I was feeling your post, it made it's way to the update.
Oh, and i'm sure watching Harry Potter would be very, um, interesting haha. On that note, I bet I know why you like these posts so much -- you just like the title ;)
Shit! You're onto me...
ReplyDeleteI mean: What? NO! It's all about the music, man!
I love listening to cover songs and I'm completely heartbroken that Turkey has some sort of ban so that I can't click on the link!!! Damn.
ReplyDeleteQuietdrive has a couple covers I like. Time After Time being one of them.
P.S. I'm seeing the Potter movie tomorrow I think :)
Shawna's Study Abroad
well, for this one, I think Lostprophets have done themselves proud. It's not much of a song anyway but heaps better than JT's.
ReplyDelete@Shawna:
ReplyDeletescrew Turkey, but I am jealous that you are there. But they should still let you click on links...
@TeH:
Thanks for the feedback. I liked rocking out to it, so lostprophets get a win in my back. Hope you check out the others as well
I love JT's version anyway and I have to admit that I listened to the Lostprophets cover with some dread ... only to be pleasantly surprised! I quite liked it. I still prefer JT's (because I find it easier to sing along to really loudly and badly), but I'd listen to the other version again.
ReplyDelete@GI:
ReplyDelete"only to be pleasantly surprised". Those are words I believe every blogger would love to hear when posting stuff like this. Thank you.
I know this is a super old post, but I wasn't around back then...so look up this song by a band called The Cliks.
