It's getting really hard to leave the stories of my connection with this band out of these posts. But hopefully it will draw attention to Sunday's post.
Today's album highlight is Anberlin's latest release, coming out exactly two years ago, "New Surrender." I remember being kind of "eh" about it at first because admittedly, it is a slight departure from earlier work. But after giving it a few more rotations I really got into it.
Song selection from today is "Soft Skeletons"
"Dear little girl
There's so much hurt for such a young age
Trapped inside a pretty little lie
Your body's betrayed
Don't fix your eyes on a fix you'll rely on
Fixed her eyes on a fix she relies upon
Stand unafraid
All the good souls
Stand unafraid
When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?
Are you too afraid to fight?
Dear little one, there was so much pain
Time you can't replace
Trapped inside, too afraid to cry
And now hands and bruises cover face
Don't fix your eyes on a fix you'll rely on
Fixed her eyes on a fix
When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?
Stand unafraid
All the good souls
Stand unafraid
All of the good souls stand unafraid
When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war
When the light starts to burn, and the pain returns
I just wish that I could heal the hurt you feel tonight
There's life in your veins
These needles are chains to hold you down
How can you expect to win this war if you're too afraid to fight?"
I will, as promised, listen to this song later...but change your title - it should say 3 not 2.
ReplyDeleteGood eye. And I hope you like it :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Mr. O. Do you remember that one time we talked on the phone when I was having a not-so-great night? Well I was listening to this song. This song is again tied as my favorite with of course, Blame Me!, Blame Me!, Blame Me!. But you know that already. Every time I hear this album I think of your radio show and when you put Anberlin on a countdown I was pumped. Like I almost rocked out TOO hard on the fuckmill.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about Anberlin albums is that they have songs on albums that are on other albums. Like The Feel Good Drag is also on Never Take Frienships Personal AND New Surrender. While the song is arranged a little differently it drives me nuts. The only other artist that does that kind of thing is Bryan Adams and I'm only a little ashamed to admit I know that. :) So I'm REALLY hoping that there are no repeat tracks on the new album.
Ah yes, Blame Me! is definitely second favorite track: "Torturing ourselves
ReplyDeleteWe must be into the abuse
If you're the rope that ties us together
Then please make me a noose"
But to your other comment, that is the only time they have done that. "Lost Songs" doesn't really count because it was a b-sides/covers/acoustics thing.
But their first three cds were released on a more independent label, with "New Surrender" being their first with a major label and they decided to re-record as the lead single.
It worked for me because when I first heard it on the radio, I was like "why this old song?" but it got people like us, that knew the original, to get excited about them, tell our friends, elseworth.
I'm listening as I type this comment - I like this one the best so far (based on the order you put these in, I guess that makes sense).
ReplyDeleteI don't normally listen to this genre of music - not even how you would classify it (Skate rock?), but this is decent.
As for having a good eye - I'm always here for you when it comes to grammar, spelling & typos :)
Urgh - clearly I don't have a good eye for my own typos!
