#17: Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal

If you recall, I said earlier when talking about Armor For Sleep in this countdown, that it was one of two cds that I got from my ex for a birthday because I liked the burned version so much I wanted the real thing. "Never Take Friendship Personal" was the other one.

The first time I heard Anberlin, I was immediately intrigued. However, my love for them didn't grow till later. I had to learn to appreciate the work put in by the band because, to be honest, at first, I just kinda thought they were good, but not enough to go crazy over.

Then I listened to them more and more. And I think the thing I admire most about Anberlin is how they can have what some would call "emo" lyrics, but they are sung in an adult setting. Does that make sense? I hope it does. I guess I'm just trying to say it has always felt like real emotion, rather than whining.

And it's not just heartbreak. Love is in there. Relationships in general is an overall theme with the band, as you could kind of see in the countdown leading up to this post.

I have to say, this cd was chosen because it was the one that introduced me to them. But I feel all their releases are on the same level and all have definitive songs. On this release you have songs about staying in touch, a friend confessing love just a little too late, and always bailing on relationships.

It also contains the original version of the band's 2008 radio hit "The Feel Good Drag." Check out the one that was released for this cd, which as a fun fact - was released the year I graduated, and some other standouts below.

  1. I know we talked about this before, but I just want to say I'm glad someone finally pointed out that talking (writing or singing) about emotions isn't the same as whining. Whining is what people refer to as emo. Not all emotional reactions are whiny!

You know I hate it when the term emo is used to describe any emotional reaction to something. That's the thing about music - how can you not have an emotional reaction?

As for THIS music, I'll give them a listen, as promised.

  2. ooh-- I won't even tell you how thrilled I am that this is the album you put on your countdown. Because it might make you feel all gushy inside. LOL!!

Day Late Friend is probably one of my top 5 Anberlin songs. Mostly because I can relate to it. A lot.

Feel Good Drag-- oh I can relate. :)I feel like this is me really. Like I'm faithful to hubs but oh...I think I'd be good at being "that girl". Seductive and sexy if I wanted to be. But now in the whorish type way but yeah-- you get it.

Paperthin Hymn- this song is pretty. Obviously it's sad but really- it's like a love song. At least to me.

Dance, Dance- "she's no saint but she'll take you to your knees" and "you'll adore me before the night is over". Yeah-- I had a boy who had a pretty big crush on me and these lyrics? He told me reminded him of me. He's like "you leave a string of heartbroken boys and you don't even know it." And so now EVERY time I hear that song I think of that boy. And if I saw him again- I'd tell him. :)

I pretty much love every Anberlin song. LOL. Fabulous choice, lover!
