(50) Sundays of Music: #37

#37: Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue

Seriously, who rocks out with a violin? Apparently these guys.

I bet you are thinking that I am going to talk about playing this cd nonstop during the same summer that everyone else was getting to "Ocean Avenue" the song. Well, almost.

I first heard "Way Away" on believe it or not, NFL Madden. I believe it was 2003? It was the year Micheal Vick was on the cover (good times). Madden has always had a good soundtrack and "Way Away" was one song that stuck out to me.

THEN came the summer where I got obsessed with "Ocean Avenue" just like every other kid at the time. Though, I'm not sure if everybody who really loved the song got into the cd which is a shame. The whole cd was pretty good and in my opinion, the last good cd they put out.

"Breathing" is probably still my favorite track on the cd just because I like the rock out factor. Obviously "Ocean Avenue" is a classic, but almost every track is great on its own. "Empty Apartment" is a good chillish track, "Twenty Three" makes me think of my friends, "Inside Out" I didn't really appreciate until going through a break-up, and the closing track "Back Home" is one of my all time favorites.

However, the stand out track for me was and always will be "Only One." Yes, I will admit I was one of those who cheesily dedicated it to a girl I liked. (Trivia: that girl would be the one that I would go on to date for nearly 4 years and ended pretty damn horribly, but that story is for other blog posts). It's just a track full of emotion and a song that you just feel.

I have to say, this album is pretty damn good. All the instruments and vocals came together to create something really unique and will always mark a time period in my life. Sadly, they haven't matched the quality since but I will always have this cd. Enjoy some tracks while I go reminisce...

  1. Oh Mr. O... I heart you times a million. This is one of those cd's that I have, hidden under my seat, in my van so that nobody sees it's in there. *sigh* I really loved this cd and never got into anything else of theirs which is a shame. BUT this is a good one and this is a great cd to drive to, especially when you are pissed off and feel like screaming, simply because it's easy to sing too. Even if you can't sing. Whatever.

    AND..I have an AWESOME idea for you for next year's Music Sundays. :) I'll email it to you..as soon as I get some time. Maybe at work this week. Anxious for radio show tomorrow!! (Care to give me any hints as to the #1 spot??)

  2. I just found my copy of this the other day! I don't listen to them anymore, but "Only One" was one of my *fav* songs in high school. Good memories! :) I never liked "Ocean Ave" at ALL though, probably because it was sooo overplayed over here.

  3. I love bands that use violins it makes me happy. I love Yellowcard, they are vastly under appreciated. Good choice. Although I'm with Lisa in never liking Ocean Ave.

  5. Spot on. This album is a CLASSIC, and I'll never forget seeing them on Warped Tour in 2004. While I came for "Ocean Avenue," I too stayed for "Breathing," "Empty Apartments," and "Believe." "Life Of A Salesman" always hit close to home and I too used "Only One" for a girl. It's sad the group never really crossed over after this album, but I always thought "Lights & Sounds" was just as good.

  6. @Sara:
    guilty pleasure cd? I will go with that. And true, it's fun to sing along, especially "here i GOOOOOOO" in Only One. Looking forward to your idea and thanks for your curiousity, but I'm fresh out of clues :)

    @Lisa:
    I can understand not liking a song after it gets overplayed. I'm glad the cd is still a good one for you though!

    @jeanette:
    my friends and I always joked about having a band and one of us was going to play the violin. No lie.

    @Nic:
    You are the one that gave me the idea, now I just have to step up to the plate. Finals will be over soon, so it shall be done.

    @Mike:
    I forgot to talk about "Life of a Salesman" for the same reason. And I agree, Lights and Sounds and even Rough Landing, Holly were good songs. But the albums as a whole never grabbed me like this one did. Glad to see someone else liked "Breathing" cuz I love that song.

  7. I never really got into Yellowcard - but I have a hilarious video of a bunch of my friends singing "only one" at a party.

    If you like violin in rock music look into the Canadian band Hey Rosetta! They're from Newfoundland and are soooo good.
