We got our yearbook's yesterday and I normally don't get a yearbook but since I figured this is my last year, what the hell. It also helps that the theme this year was "I Am Auburn" and people joined a facebook group and said what they were with examples being "I am a senior who has no idea what they are doing" or "I am someone who bleeds orange and blue" or "I am addicted to facebook."
Mine was published below:
Mine starts about 11 or 12 lines up. A Fight Club reference and a Taking Back Sunday lyric in the same block? Yea, I went there.
But let's get to the point of this post: the results of the top vocalists feedback.
As you noticed from the title, there was more than ten. That's because you guys gave me names I had forgotten and some names I wouldn't have thought to put there, but since they got so many mentions had to make the list. I have to confess that I was looking for more in the type of genre that I play, so artists like Frank Sinatra and Springsteen didn't make it, but that doesn't mean I don't respect them. Just had a different set to get to.
Right here is where I would post a recording of the show I had on Monday night, which was part 1. But something went haywire and the recording didn't work. I am going to do everything I can to make sure next Monday's show works. I mean, that's the one that counts (15-1), right?
As far as the actual list goes, I had to take off some great names that if there would have been a top 40 definitely would have been on there. Jack White, Chris Cornell, Bert McCracken, Karen O, Gerard Way, John Mayer, Bono, Davey Havok and (very, very sadly) Anthony Keidis were a few names that didn't make the cut. I'm sure I'm going to get some arguments, which is good. I don't consider myself a know-all; just someone with an opinion and this is just mine. So here are numbers 30-16.
30. Brandon Boyd (Incubus)
29. Regina Spektor
28. Combo of Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie (Underoath)
27. Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate; Jack's Mannequin)
26. Zooey Deschanel (She & Him)
25. Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie; The Postal Service)
24. Jason Mraz
23. Ryan Hunter (Envy On The Coast)
22. Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
21. Feist
20. Andrew Stockdale (Wolfmother)
19. Dan Layus (Augustana)
18. Anthony Green (Saosin; Circa Survive; Solo work)
17. Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse)
16. Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional)
Special thanks to those that tuned in. I feel you caught a good show. Hopefully, next week's (more important) show will be even better.
I see a couple of mine made the cut - can't wait for next week's list!
ReplyDeleteI agree with um...half of them. ;) When I think of a top vocalist I think of someone who is excellent live. Live is where it counts. If I see an artist/band live and they sound nothing like they do on record- they lost a fan. I'm that fickle. I feel duped if they sound totally different, or worse case scenario- horrible, live.
ReplyDeleteWith that...I haven't seen most of these people live so I can't really rate them. But if you like them then I likely would as well. Being BB's and all.
But Frank? You left off Frank? (clutching my heart..)
Also, what songs did you play for each? Were you able to play all 15?
ReplyDeleteUmmmmmm, wait a second-- your college has yearbooks?!?!? That so cool!
ReplyDeleteGreat list...and good song choices too when you played them. I really enjoyed listening on Monday! :)
Boo, Sinatra being off the list.
ReplyDeleteBoo, Bono/Cornell not making the list.
That being said... holy crap, that group of 15 is fantastic. :-P
@everybody:
ReplyDeleteWhile I can't deny Sinatra is a classic, I just don't feel he fit on the show, ya know? But I'm glad the rest isn't getting much hate. Except if JSjov saw it, she would say boo to Brandon Boyd :)
That being said, I want to once again thank those who listened. And if you didn't mark your calendars for next Monday night.
As far as what songs I played, I'm working on a little something for another post...
I try not to hate on people's musical choices because I always feel super vulnerable when sharing what I like because I feel like if someone tells me a band I like sucks I'll feel like they're telling me I suck.
ReplyDeleteSo no hate from me, only love.
Can't wait for next week.
Great list! Each has their own sound. Awesome taste man. Oh and yay for the Fight Club reference.
ReplyDeleteNoooooo. Why did Anthony Keidis not make the cut? He's amazing live and is a lyrical genius!!! Zooey Deschanel? Her group is only famous because of her husband and '500 days of summer'. She's only had 2 albums out and her voice is monotonous (but that's just my opinion...i really don't get the recent hype around her)
