Music Sunday: The First CD I Ever Purchased

Before we begin, I want to self-promote a lil bit. I was featured on a wonderful fellow blogger's post about the greatest songs of all time. If you do click on it, the first ten are what I deem "classics" the second ten are my personal favorites. I hope you enjoy, and stick around and find out what others had to say.

Now, on to business. As I have stated, Music Sunday for the entire year of 2010 will be my personal favorite cd's or albums, whichever you prefer. I'm kind of weird about numbers and when I realized that there are 52 Sundays in the year, I just figured I would wait and start in two weeks to give it an even 50. The format will be different than this. This is just a sort of intro.

Next week, I will bring you the honorable mentions. The cd's that just didn't make the cut. But today, I bring you the first cd I ever purchased.

Released in 1996 to coincide with the movie, I was about 9 or 10 when I had some money saved up from some odd jobs. I had gotten a portable cd player to replace the Walkman I had been handed down and I, like most of America at the time, loved the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. So naturally, I loved this movie and HAD to have the soundtrack. Searching for the clips that you will find below brings back so many memories and makes me laugh to go back to that time, especially because this is NOTHING like the music I would come to love.

Some personal stories:

*I remember singing "I Believe I Can Fly" for my Grandma one day. So, next Christmas she bought me a snow globe with that song in it. I need to find that thing...

*Riding my back around the neighborhood bobbin my head thinking I was SO cool

*More recently, we had a "trivia night" at my friend's apartment complex and one of the questions was they played a clip of a song from a movie. My friend, joking around, kept saying "SPACE JAM" and I'd be damned if the last song wasn't R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly"

So please, enjoy these tracks from the first cd a future music lover ever purchased.

So tell me, what was the first CD you ever purchased?

  1. I'm pretty sure my first cd was a double purchase of Spice Girls "Spice" and Blink 182 "Cheshire Cat"... details are a little fuzzy.

  2. Oh my. I'm going to ignore this post completely and keep my snickering to myself. :) LOL!!! Oh god, I think the first CD I purchased was Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream...still love it as much as I did then. In fact, my daughter loves the song Cherub Rock and my son loves SilverFuck. Nice. :)

  3. Great question Mr O, seriously!

    I'm 28, the first cd I got was actually an album by Kid n Play! Remember them from house party? The first song I remember was called "energy" aha. I can remember the next few were dr dre the chronic, snow (informer) and and Shaq-fu. How embarrassing!

    I asked to borrow this girls soundgarden "superunknown" cd and inside the case was actually hendrix electric ladyland. Fucking fell in love with it.

    By the way I can't believe you didn't include any jimi hendrix on your list, at least put purple haze or all along the watchtower, c'mon!

  4. The first CD I ever purchased was one by LeeAnn Rhymes LOL. Also, the Space Jam theme song was the song for the first Colorguard tryout routine I ever did.

  7. @jeanette:
    I would have loved to have been the clerk that rang up those cds together

    @Sara:
    you can snicker all you'd like, I did remembering I bought this cd haha. Little fun fact: I don't like the Smashing Pumpkins. I have no idea why either. I feel like I should. But the few songs I play on Rock Band I have come to tolerate

    @Mr C:
    great to see you pop in, I have to check out your contest. But Kid N Play! That's awesome haha. And so is Dr. Dre, classic.

    You are right. I admit I committed a travesty by not including Mr. Hendrix. Thank you for taking the time to check it out

    Lastly, I have a similar story. I learned of my favorite band when I bought their cd for a friend and popped in my cd player first to see what it sounded like. Your story is cooler than mine, but I still wanted to share

    @Cassie:
    I wish youtube was around when you were in colorguard cuz that would have been AWESOME to see

    @Jenn:
    glad I could make you laugh, because there is NO WAY I am revealing what my second cd was. Let's just say I am glad to have grown up and discovered actual music

    @Jaime:
    98 Degrees is a throwback. We tried to sing "I Do" at a friend's wedding and failed miserably

My mum was saying no because of the language warning and i was throwing a massive tanty over my friends having it and her not letting me have it. Yes- i won. And i still have that cd!!

  9. Hey! Thanks so much for commenting on my blog! It really made my day just a little bit brighter to get such supportive feedback :)
    I adored "I believe I can fly!" Music Sunday sounds like such an amaaazing idea. I look forward to listening to your selections for the blog! I have no idea what my first CD was... perhaps backstreet boys? Perhaps Jennifer Paige... I remember I was obsessed with her song "Crush" for the longest time.

    Do you have any recommendations for more dance-y songs? I've been in a more techno-y/up-beat kinda mood.. looking for songs you can dance to and run to. Haha perhaps the equivalent of a 2010 upgrade of Space Jam o.O
    :)
