Driving slow on Sunday morning / And I never want to leave

About a year ago I pulled out a notebook and began jotting down some of my favorite albums. I had thought of this great big theme of "Music Sundays" where I was going to countdown my top 50. This upcoming Sunday will mark the first selection of only five left before we get to #1.

My #1 favorite album. That's kind of a big deal for a music junkie.

I want to take a second to thank anyone who has left on a comment on the 45 posts so far (and the guest posts as well). It's been nice to get feedback on something that is actually kind of personal - stories of how these albums left an impact on my life.

And make no mistake, each one has left an impact. It's why I always tried to write the post from the perspective of how it felt to listen to the cd, rather than a review. Because if this was a "Best" list, it would be dramatically re-ordered.

With all that said, I want to take a minute to tease the next five selections come up. The thing about them is this: when I made this list around this time last year, these five I already had set. It was the other 45 I had to figure out. That's why they are so special to me.

#5 - A cd that clearly defines my college years. I heard of it through, and continually played it because of, my college radio station. Man I miss being a dj there.

#4 - A cd that clearly defined my high school years. Apparently I wasn't able to let go as there was a poster of them on my wall during my freshman year of college.

#3 - When I think of all the selections, this one may get the most surprise for being so high. But for it's simplicity, it was one of the first to make me look at an album as an experience from the first track to the last.

#2 - A selection that won't come as a surprise to anybody. Even you have visited this blog only once.

#1 - Not to spoil the beginning of the eventual post, but someone recently asked me if I know why I started getting so into music. This album was part of my answer.

(Note: Maroon 5's Songs About Jane isn't one of them, but "Sunday Morning" is one of my favorite songs ever. I just thought it fit).

  1. I better not be disappointed...pretty obvious what I'm referring to. :)

  2. I'm glad because Songs About Jane sucked fucking ass aside from maybe 2 songs, Sunday Morning being one of them. Their second album though.... UBBER important in my life. Anyways.

    I'm super excited about your list. You know I've been since the beginning (which if I remember right... we being bb's like last January??) so this is fun. It feels like the closing of a chapter. And I hope that you have another really cool countdown planned for 2011. No pressure.. ;)

    AND I hope you do a Best of 2010 because I'd be interested in that. Just sayin.

  3. I'm not gonna even guess, because I'd rather be surprised. I do want to say that I hope you enjoyed writing them as much as we enjoyed reading about them. I'll admit, I didn't know a lot of the albums you put in here - BUT - I think someone's musical history is almost as important as the music itself. Now that it's been a year, would you have changed any in this list if you were to do this over again? Of the ones you've already revealed I mean, not your top 5.

    I know you never really responded to any of the reactions to this, and you still don't have to...but...don't stop writing this after the last album is dropped (so-to-speak). I bet you have a lot of stories up your sleeve, and new music to talk about. I know I haven't been following you the whole time or anything, but I'd miss this.

  4. Color me excited. I have an idea about #3 and #1, but I don't know for sure!

    BTW, that's a FANTASTIC Maroon 5 song. I remember loving "Songs About Jane" and having all my friends call me a faggot for it. Don't care. Great song on a great album.

  5. @Lisa:
    I can guarantee you will not be disappointed, and I know exactly what you are referring to

    @Sara:
    I wouldn't quite put it like that, haha, but I feel their next cd was better. It does feel like a closing chapter, good word choice.

    And I've actually been thinking about my best of 2010 (and feeling like a nerd because it's been all I've been thinking about haha) so thanks for the confidence.

    And I need to think of what I'm going to do for 2011...

    @Allison:
    haha you don't have to guess, I think I just wanted to show that these top 5 are a big deal.

    I have enjoyed writing them, it's been fun to go back (I usually listen to the cd at least once before I write it). And funny you ask, because there are definitely some spots I would change. Some I originally left out on accident and some from this year (Mumford and Sons, The Black Keys) that deserve their own place.

    Honestly, it's comments like this that make it where I most likely won't. Also, Mike once said to me about the pros of having a place that's all your own. Both are good advice and this spot of blogging will most likely live on.

    Thank you for your words.

    @Mike:
    I think you would have an idea for 1-4, actually. Only #5 because I'm not sure if we have ever discussed that band. But thanks for the interest, as going into these last 5 I feel like I'm going into the most special.

    And yea, you get that from time to time as a result of being fans of all kinds of music. But I will defend "Sunday Morning" to the death! haha
