The Double Feature

Not counting Grindhouse, I've only pulled watching two movies in theaters in one day one time. I was visiting my friends in Tuscaloosa and they waited to see Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift and I wanted to see Nacho Libre. We couldn't agree so we just saw both. Ironically, I ended up liking Tokyo Drift and not really caring for Nacho.
That was nearly five years ago. Two weekends ago, I pulled my second double feature. I wanted to see both Megamind and Due Date and I've made a friend around here that has same sense of cinematic adventure so I proposed the challenge and she accepted.
I have to say, it was a success.
We were scheduled to watch the non 3-d Megamind at 4:20 but didn't get there till like 4:50 so we ended up watching the 3-d version at 5. The feature wasn't necessary, but the movie was great. I have heard some people saying it was terrible so maybe you shouldn't trust me, but I absolutely loved it. You could say it's because I like animated movies (Finding Nemo and Up are straight up classics) and I am a huge Will Ferrell fan (I did a happy dance when I saw Anchorman was released on blu-ray). The two combined to bring me a animated movie with a PG version of Ferrell's humor. So for me it was win-win and I enjoyed myself.
Then we left to meet a friend of hers who just got off work. Chilled with him for a minute before headed back to where the theater was and enjoying some Arby's. I admitted halfway through my curly fries that I was a wee-bit tired. But a challenge was a challenge and we decided to finish this thing.
Like I said, the double feature was a success, but part of it's triumph was that both movies were great. Due Date had me laughing and made me forget I was tired. Being from the south, it was actually funny to watch them eat at a Waffle House (that's a whole nother blog post though). And without spoiling anything, it was cool to see them take near the exact same route we did when we did an Alabama to California trip.
I do have one gripe about Due Date. I love Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis (and before I saw this, I did like the movie) but I felt like they played the same exact characters they always play. Downey with the hard shell you have to remove before seeing he's not so bad and Zach pretty much playing his Hangover well. Like I said, it's not a complaint because it worked, especially Downey. But as funny as Zach was, I couldn't help notice it was the EXACT same character from the Hangover. But I guess that's what you get when you have a director who had success with one movie and wants more success. I can't stress this enough: It's not a complaint, more of an observation.
Both movies were fun and the double feature was a success. If you haven't done one, you should try it.
I demand an entire post about waffle houses! I love waffles! Do it!
ReplyDeleteI want to see the Due Date - but I don't go to movies much. I'll wait till the DVD I guess.
Also, I know you hate Jason Schwartzman - But he's on a show on HBO called Bored to Death with Zack Galifianakis and Ted Danson and I pretty much love it because I love all of those actors.
WHOA
ReplyDeleteHate is a strong word. I never said I hated him, he's just not one of my favorites. Kinda like some people can't stand Ferrell's style but I love it. I was just never the biggest fan of his. But I have heard of that show and if I had HBO I would give it a shot.
LOVED due date, obviously. But I still need to see Megamind. Assuming that they're still showing it in Troy.
ReplyDeleteI loved Due Date. But I also have a love for Downey Jr that is ALMOST as deep as my love for Robert Pattinson. But the movie was so good and I kept thinking your CaliBama road trip. You have no idea how badly I wanted to text that to you during the movie. I didn't because I'm not a total asshole... at least in the movies. :) And I agree that they played kind of the same characters- but it works. And it's funny. And I think if Zach would have done the character any differently--- it would have failed. But god DAMN is Downey looking good. MMMMM
ReplyDeleteOh- and seeing Downey in this? Makes me EVEN MORE excited for Sherlock Holmes 2. I may or may not be expecting topless Downey. ;)
