So consider this a warning. As part of the college credit portion of this internship, I have to talk about what I've been doing, like the day-to-day stuff. He actually said "maybe start a little blog or something." So I will have one prepared for them, but I'm going to share it with you guys. So guess what? You are coming on this ride with me.
So I'm not sure if I'm going to post everyday or just recaps (more than likely just recaps) but here is what I did today:
*got introduced to various people
*was shown how to put stuff on a "budget" that lets the staff know who is working on what
*also shown various parts of publishing the article
*had to record the voicemail greeting for my desk phone. Really awkward, at least for me. Because though I'm in a cubicle type setting, there aren't really "walls." So everyone can hear everyone else. I need to gain some confidence about talking in front of people because I realize this is my weakness
*was taken out to lunch by my editor. Thought that was cool. Said I got one at the beginning and one at the end. Went to a little soup, sandwich and burger type place and I got a club sandwich that was very tasty.
*Was assigned three articles and spent the rest of the day gathering information. One is a Titanic Museum in Tennessee, one is about the city of Alpharetta, GA and the other is a preview piece for Bamajam. (jme, I know you're gonna love that and thanks for the good luck text by the way).
After work, I came home and decided to do my radio show. I say decided because they said I can keep my slot this summer even though it will be kind of sporadic when I can come in. It turned out to be one of the best ones I've done (the theme was music from this year). Hopefully it got recorded and you guys can hear it.
So that's about it. Hopefully I can keep this thing interesting for the summer.
Random lyric of the day:
I wanted love, I needed love
Most of all, most of all..
Someone said 'True Love' was dead
but I'm bound to fall
Bound to fall for you
Oh what can I do?
Most of all, most of all..
Someone said 'True Love' was dead
but I'm bound to fall
Bound to fall for you
Oh what can I do?
I had an internship right after I graduated - at a local magazine.
ReplyDeleteWhat will your degree be in? What will you be doing at this paper?
Sorry for all the questions...good luck!
Congrats on the internship! Sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteSince I'm probably going to be poor and unemployed for the rest of my life, will you hire me to be a writer or proofreader or something in a few years? I say thing because I'm pretty positive you are going to have a successful journalism career. :) Congrats on making it through day 1!
ReplyDelete@Allison:
ReplyDeleteI don't think two questions qualifies for an apology haha.
1) Journalism and 2) So far, just writing articles for the Arts & Entertainment section. I may have a few different assignments here and there but for right now that's it
@Liz:
Thanks!
@Lisa:
I appreciate the confidence :) And yea, I've already thought about it. If I can get my own magazine or something, you're coming!
First off, I feel like I'm behind the eight ball on everything and slacking on you. Sorry. But...after you get through my blog posts coming up this week you'll know why I feel like I'm developing dementia at age 28. SADS.
ReplyDeleteSecond, I am super duper pumped that you have a great internship. Yes, the voicemail thing is weird, isn't it? I had that at my job but I had to do not only mine but the message for the program where it would direct you which button to hit for what. With everyone staring at me. They said I had a happy voice so yeah- that's what happens when you have a happy voice. ;)
Third- do I even have to say how excited I am about the show still possibly being on??? No, I don't think I do. I just had a hunch to check last night and there's my BB. I dropped EVERYTHING to listen. I didn't get onto FB till the end, but still. I put my groceries away jamming to you. Which interupted hubs' Antique Roadshow which I wish would just stop coming on tv.
Fourth, don't forget that your BB is a get proofreader when she wants to be. I lax on my blog because I can. ;) OR I can be your secretary. I can't make coffee worth a damn but I make fabulous homemade shakes and baked goods. I can research like a fiend and I and write about almost anything. And I'm currently unemployed. ;)
SO JEALOUS! 1. do you get to go to the actual titanic museum? because they were building it when Aaron and I were on our honeymoon but we REALLY WANTED TO GO!
ReplyDelete2. My cousin is from Alpharetta.
3. HA sucks abt the BamaJam thing. Atleast you don't actually have to go........right?
Congratulations, that's amazing - over here the newspapers have stopped taking interns, you know, IN THIS ECONOMY. Which is sad.
ReplyDeleteI almost did a journalism degree. I think in another life I might have been great at it.
I'm sorry I missed it last night. I hope it was recorded, cause this naughty redhead is missing some Mr. O in her life. ;)
ReplyDeleteAlso - good luck. Media jobs are crazy hard to get - it's a jungle out here in the so-called "real world."
ReplyDeleteI won't be a Debbie Downer though - so enjoy every second of this.
@Sara:
ReplyDeleteFirst, I don't know what you're talking about. You're crazy.
Second, voicemail is weird. And I don't have a happy voice, I have a mumbling voice
Third, thanks for still being excited. I need my fans to stick around
Fourth, note to self "hire Sara when I become ballin." check
@j:
1. I wish you could have seen it, it looks cool.
2. Alpharetta seems decent for concerts haha
3. Naw, I don't have to go. But I may get to interview Hank Williams Jr so that's cool.....right?
@Magpie:
thanks for the congrats. Yea, cuz of the economy I'm working an entire summer for free. But hopefully it will be worth it.
@ My Dearest Lola,
I did try to record it. Let's see if it's successful. Maybe I need to insert some Mr O into your life :)
@Allison:
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate that comment. Especially the non-DDness.
