Confession: I am 100% stealing the "Music Sunday" idea from miss*H. I have always wanted to do something similar and I hope she doesn't mind if I take her idea. Especially because I am giving her full credit ;)
I know it seems like I am always talking about a show I'm going to (I didn't even talk about the Drum and Bass event I went to in October) but I guess you have to live when you are young and able, right? On Tuesday, I will be seeing a band I have liked for a while, Minus the Bear, in Birmingham. I usually go to Atlanta for shows, but Bham is also about two hours away. I have only been there once, for an Armor for Sleep/Underoath/Taking Back Sunday show in 2007. But this place I'm going to called The Workplay seems to be much smaller venue which should be nice.
We started listening to Minus the Bear during my freshman year when my roommate at the time, Hedman (who I am still friends with now -- he has been mentioned here before), brought them into the house. He and Frisco got into them first. For whatever reason, it took me a little longer. But once I did, and the entire house did, we REALLY got into their sound. It's just... different. Especially for what I usually listen to. It's very chill, but they can also jam with the best of them. We have kept up with them over the years and thanks to torrents were able to get their entire discography a few years back.
Last week, my brother went to a show of theirs in California. He was texting me telling me he was there and I was telling him I was jealous and that we were contemplating going ourselves. Afterward, he said the entire show, openers and all, was "perfect" and said that MTB was "fucking amazing." That pretty much convinced me to get on it and upon realizing that tickets were ridiculously cheap, they were purchased.
Now I would like to share some of the music I will be jamming to, in progression form.
From their first release, "This is What I Know About Being Gigantic" (September 2001)
From their debut album, "Highly Refined Pirates" (August 2002)
From an EP released between albums, "Bands Like It When You Yell "YAR" At Them" (May 2004)
From the album that has gone down as a classic, "Menos el Oso" (August 2005)
From the remix album, "Interpretaciones del Oso" (February 2007)
From their third full length, "Planet of Ice" (August 2007)
From an acoustic album, "Acoustics" (October 2008)
And finally, their latest single, off an album due out next year (October 2009)
Music Sundays...what a perfect idea!
ReplyDeleteHave you heard the Kings of Leon CD 'Only by the Night'? It's fan-flippin-tastic!
I'm going to need to check them out again. Give them another chance. Have a blasty blast at the concert!
ReplyDeleteHey stranger! Love the Music Sunday idea- I was thinking last week of maybe starting a music blog but I am not sure if I'll have time for a second blog...but I LOVE your idea and I can't wait to read more of your Sunday posts!
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Minus the Bear but I did listen to snippets from the videos, and I can safely say that I don't like them. hahah...I'm so mean. I'd maybe like them if their sound was a bit more mellow..
Have a great week! :)
@Melissa:
ReplyDeleteYea, it is a great idea, that's why I stole it, haha. But yea, that cd is one of my all time favorites. I am very late in getting into the Kings themselves, but I agree with your description of the cd. My favorite track is "Revelry."
@jeanette:
well, hopefully you will like the second chance. Thanks well wishes, haha. I'm sure you can relate, seeing as how we have a like a sort of concert connection
@Lisa:
always appreciate honesty... but they are somewhat mellow. That's why we like them. Please try listening to the second to last one again, the acoustic one. Hopefully you will like that one.
And yea, I can see how a whole nother blog could get tiresome. So just steal this idea, and let's make a Music Sunday MOVEMENT!
ooh good idea ;) I'm behind yet again on mine this week.
ReplyDeleteI like, I like a lot!!! (off to download some more). They remind me of another band who's tune is in my head right now but whose name has escpated me. Grrr!!
I think you might like the next few bands I'm about to post about
I like 'em. Who's their lead singer? He sounds kind of familiar.
ReplyDeleteYou have impeccable taste! Bravo.
ReplyDelete@MissH:
ReplyDeletethanks for liking this idea... i mean it was yours after all ;)
@Tennyson:
I don't know the name, but if his first name was Mr. and his last name was Awesome, that would sound about right to me
@thing I don't know a word for:
Thank you for the taste compliment. Maybe we can get some of your music tastes?
I always love hearing about bands that I have not listened to before. Thanks for this post. I would have commented earlier but I was in Phoenix for work! ;( They are pretty cool too. I am probably going to download some of their songs. Thanks to you and Jeanette, I am expanding my musical pallet. Yay for that. Oh and I love Taking Back Sunday. I can't believe I haven't listened to them before!
